TEXAS TWP.—A woman's body found Tuesday, June 7, on South 10th Street in Texas Township, has been identified by police as Gabrielle Irene Smith, 32, of Plainwell.
The Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office said Smith was found laying alongside the rural road between West U Avenue and West S Avenue south of Schoolcraft.
Smith's body was found a few hours before a group of adults bicycling in Cooper Township were hit by a pickup truck, killing five and injuring four.
Undersheriff Paul Matyas said Smith was not struck by a vehicle or beaten since there were no signs of blunt-force trauma; however, her death is considered "very suspicious." The cause and circumstances remain under investigation.
Smith was a single mother, employed as a skinner operator at JBS in Plainwell, according to her Facebook page. She attended Plainwell High School and studied at Kalamazoo Valley Community College.
Memorial services are being arranged for Friday, June 10, from 2 to 3 p.m. at Rupert, Durham, Marshall & Gren, 120 S. Woodhams St., Plainwell, where the funeral service will be at 3 p.m.
