Allegan County Commissioner Jon Campbell no longer intends to seek election as county clerk-register.
Campbell announced he was suspending his campaign at the end of a special county commission meeting Wednesday, June 29.
The retired Otsego police officer said he had recently been promoted at the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs and believes that is where he needs to be.
“If I knew at the filing deadline I was going to be considered and get a promotion that gave me substantial responsibility, I wouldn’t have filed (for clerk),” he said.
Campbell said he is now manager of the Occupational Code Enforcement Section, which is part of the department that enforces rules that govern licensed professionals. Earlier this year, he was hired there as a regulation agent investigating accountants.
His name will still appear on the Aug. 2 ballot along with former state Rep. Bob Genetski, who is also seeking the Republican nomination for the job.
Since Campbell did not file to keep his seat as District 6 county commissioner. Former Otsego Township supervisor Gale Dugan and former Commissioner Bill Sage of Trowbridge Township will compete Aug. 2 for the GOP nomination for it.
