The death of a Plainwell woman found dead alongside a road in 2016 has been ruled an accidental drug overdose.

Gabrielle Irene Smith, 32, was found dead Tuesday, June 7, 2016, on South 10th Street in Texas Township. At the time, police wouldn’t release the cause of death, only terming it suspicious, but now said it had been determined to be a heroin overdose.

Kalamazoo County Undersheriff Paul Matyas said, “In summary, the Sheriff’s Office was able to identify a person who placed her at the edge of the road where she was ultimately found deceased.”

The sheriff’s office, Matyas said, submitted the case to the Kalamazoo County Prosecuting Attorney’s office in April for possible charges, but they’d declined to pursue the case.

“The Assistant Prosecutor advised that while the person’s acts were morally reprehensible, it was not to the level of being unlawful,” Matyas said. “The family has been notified of this and the case is currently inactive.”

Smith was found laying alongside a country road between West U Avenue and West S Avenue south of Schoolcraft in Kalamazoo County. She was a mother of four and had worked at JBS in Plainwell at the time of her death.
