The Rotary Club of Plainwell hosted a fundraising sandwich sale during the Plainwell City Festival early this summer, which helped fund scholarships.
The goal of the fundraiser was to raise $2,000 that will be used for scholarships for Plainwell High School Graduates in May, 2018.
With the generous support of members of the Plainwell community and JBS, Rotary said they were able to exceed their goal.
This year the club gave $500 scholarships to Kaitlyn Shafer, Sydney Rehr, Kristina O’Connell and Emma Granzow.
In all, 15 seniors applied writing on the theme of the student’s commitments to community service.
Along with scholarships, Plainwell Rotary donates to various community groups, including Christian Neighbors, the Plainwell Dog Park, the Plainwell Christmas Project, Boy Scouts, and the Kalamazoo Nature Center.
Rotarian Dale Charters said, “We had a good weekend in sales. The benefit of all this is, of course, the charities we support right here in our community. They are the winners, especially when we consider the potential to match this money, along with the money we can raise from our poinsettia sales, with grants from the Rotary District 6360 Foundation and Rotary International District Foundation. It could mean as much as $8,000 right back to the community.”
Along with community projects, Rotary does considerable humanitarian work around the world encompassing six areas of focus: to build international relationships, improve lives, and create a better world to support our peace efforts and end polio forever.
