To help relieve parking congestion, Wesco gas station will be redesigning its lot.

Plainwell city council members approved the business’s site plan at their meeting Monday, July 24.

John Tenpas, a civil engineer with Driesenga & Associates Inc. joked that “So, donut wars are going to be here,” a reference to Sweetwater’s Donut Mill plans to construct a new store across the street. “The TV show’s coming next year I think.”

Wesco, at 551 W. Allegan St., hopes to demolish the current pump canopy and redesign everything but the building, Tenpas said. The plans call for removing and replacing the underground gas tanks and repaving the 0.4-acre site.

“The canopy is going to be turned 90 degrees from the orientation that it’s currently at today,” he said. “Which is going to improve traffic flow in and off the site, better access for the people to get in to it, and not get log-jammed while they’re trying to get their gas.

“Other than the building, it’s going to be a completely new site, and Wesco’s really excited about it.”

Council member Todd Overhuel congratulated and thanked Wesco. He said, “Those changes make a lot of sense. Long overdue.”

Tenpas said, “We did work on some items in the review with Williams & Works to do with storm water management. We addressed all those concerns.

“We think you’ll be happy with the results.”
