Incumbent state Rep. Mary Whiteford won the Republican nomination Aug. 2 in her bid for reelection to the 80th District of the House of Representatives.

Unofficial tallies of the primary election posted to www.allegancounty.org show she garnered 7,278 votes.

Challenger Abigail Nobel of Dorr Township garnered 2,521 votes.

The 80th District includes all of Allegan County, except for the townships of Wayland, Dorr and Leighton and the City of Wayland.

In the November general election, she will be challenged by Democrat John Andrysiak, who ran unopposed for his party's nomination.

In the race to succeed term-limited state Rep. Ken Yonker in the 72nd District House seat, Republicans chose Wayland resident Steven Johnson.

According to unofficial tallies posted to the Michigan Secretary of State’s website, Johnson captured 29.8 percent of the votes in a field of five.

Democrats picked Caledonia resident Steve Shoemaker, who had 64 percent of the vote compared to the other Democrat’s 36 percent, garnered by Dick Cunningham.

The 72nd District includes parts of Kent County, along with the City of Wayland and the townships of Wayland, Dorr and Leighton in Allegan County.
